Every Tongue, Tribe and Nation

November 26, 2018
By Dr. Susan DeMoss

This year, our first child went to college.  While he is only forty-five minutes away, not seeing him at the dinner table, saying good night to him or knowing how his day has gone has been an adjustment. What makes the process palatable is knowing he is where God wants him to be and that we want the best for him. With this in mind, I remember the first year I came to CHA, I was amazed at how many international students attended CHA.  I could not believe that some of these students had attended CHA since they were in sixth grade. I think about how many of my international students do not get to see their families for a year! The sacrifices these families made for their children to attend school in the United States is far more than financial. I am so grateful for the work of Mrs. Audra King and our host home families who make this transition possible and positive. Most of these students have never heard the name of Jesus. I am even more thankful God has sovereignly brought the nations to CHA and even more importantly given us wonderful faculty members who share the gospel daily in their classrooms.

Sharing the gospel is the CHA Way.  It is a fulfillment of our mission statement which states that we are called to “assist the home and church in building a solid foundation in the life of each student--a life which is characterized by a personal salvation experience, the development of Christian character, the Christian conscience and Christian self-government. The ultimate goal of the Academy is to produce true Christian scholars who will be used of God to propagate the Gospel throughout the whole world and to restore our American Christian Republic to its historic, Biblical foundation.” Of all the things that I am grateful for at CHA, this is the pinnacle.  There is no greater calling than to share the good news of Jesus Christ to the nations.

This Tuesday is #GivingTuesday.  Last week, I asked you to pray how God may have you invest in CHA.  Here are four opportunities for you to partner with us in the gospel:

  1. Prayer - Please pray for the upcoming enrollment season.  Our prayer is to enroll 100 new students. This increase is not about numbers. It is about influence.  We believe that CHA has been called to train American Christian Leaders in every sphere of society. We have some of the best and most dedicated faculty and staff members in the state.
  2. Capital Campaign - Christian Heritage Academy offers it supporters many opportunities to invest in improving the facility and transportation needs of students. The Pursuing Excellence campaign focuses on both academic and athletic building and transportation improvements. This is a $1.9 million project.  Recently, we purchased two new buses which should be arriving in early January. On Thursday, November 27, we will be hosting a dedication/open house for our new Genesis Learning Center which was provided by the capitol campaign funds. We still need new monies to complete the third floor remodel and secondary STEM rooms. If you would like to give to this project or learn more about this, please click here for more information.
  3. Heritage Fund - Christian Heritage Academy offers its supporters many opportunities to support student learning. Investors in the school’s mission may give to the Heritage Fund which supports areas such as science, technology, fine arts, teacher grants and a variety of other areas in the school directly impacting student learning. Last year, monies given at the Heritage Banquet and from private donors funded items such as new chromebook carts for students, allowed teachers to attend conferences, enabled the establishment of a kinesthetic learning lab for lower elementary students (The Loop) and purchased innovative curriculum for classrooms. If you would like to give to the Heritage Fund or to learn more about this, please click here for more information.
  4. Opportunity Scholarship Fund - The OSF allows taxpayers to redirect a portion of their state tax dollars to provide tuition scholarships for students attending a private school.  Since 2014, CHA has received more than $1,085,000 in tuition assistance benefiting over 240 students. Your investment has changed Christian Heritage Academy by helping us increase our influence, broaden our diversity, and fulfill our mission of “producing true Christian scholars who will propagate the gospel and restore our nation to its historical Biblical foundation.” For more information regarding OSF, click here.

Whether through prayer, the Capital Campaign, the Heritage Fund or the Opportunity Scholarship Fund, may we count on you this #GivingTuesday as we partner in sharing the gospel with the nations?

Have a great week!

What We Do Reveals What We Value

November 20, 2018
By Dr. Susan DeMoss

Recently, the faculty has been studying CHA’s first principle of leadership which is to value people.  Value is defined as to give worth or to esteem highly. How we spend our time, yield our attention, and invest our resources reveal what we value.  Having been an educator for twenty-nine years, I can testify that teaching is more than a ten-month, 7:30am -3:50pm job.  Why? Because teaching involves relationships.  Teaching is influence.  It is far more than notebooks and grading papers.  Long after the grades have been posted, what remains are the lessons learned from the heart of the teacher which have penetrated the heart of the student.  The value teachers place upon the lives of their students is seen in their time spent, attention given and resources invested. Likewise, the value that couples place upon marriage or parents upon their children is seen in these same ways.

One morning after our faculty devotion on valuing people, Mr. Josh Bullard shared with me that his wedding gift to Genel was one single pearl.  Each year since, he has purchased an additional pearl for her necklace.  With each passing year, his relationship with Genel is even more priceless. This is a picture of the necklace.  May it be a reminder that what we do reveals what we value.

What motivates us to invest in others? Christ. His life revealed what He valued. Titus 3:5 states that Christ saved us not because of our righteousness but because of His mercy. It is the realization of His grace that inspires us to love with abandonment and invest in eternity. Matthew 13:46 speaks of this treasure as a pearl, that once found is worth selling all that we have to obtain. As a new parent, I remember praying over where the Lord would have our children to attend school.  We interviewed the public schools and private schools in the area.  We saw the pros and cons of each and brought them to the throne of God.  The realistic plan would not have been to send our children to a private school on a pastor’s salary with a stay-at-home mom.  The realistic plan would not have been to drive every day to school.  But as we prayed, the Lord revealed his plan to us. It was clear - “as I trained Paul under Gamaliel, so I will train your children.” With that, we began the step of faith of obedience and enrolled our children.  I will confess that at times it did feel like we had invested all that we had in time, attention and resources to do so.  The result though has been a priceless pearl.

What do you value? What garners your time, attention and resources? What we do reveals what we value. As Thanksgiving nears, may we give thanks to God for what He has done.  May we give thanks for those who have invested in our lives and the priceless relationships that we have with others. May we consider how we can continue to invest in others and in those things that mean the most to us.  Next Tuesday is #GivingTuesday. Would you please begin to pray and ask the Lord how He would have you invest in CHA? Whether through prayer, our Capital Campaign (for facility needs), the Opportunity Scholarship Fund (which redirects your tax dollars to CHA) or the Heritage Fund (directed toward student learning), may we count on you this thanksgiving season?

Grateful to partner with each of you!

What We Love About CHA...

November 13, 2018
By Dr. Susan DeMoss

Christian Heritage Academy is committed to training American Christian Leaders. The first principle of leadership at CHA is to value people. Value is defined as to give worth or to appraise with high esteem. Last Friday, members of CHA’s student council met with a few members of the school’s administration during lunch.  Mr. Troop Bullard shared our first leadership principle with the students and asked them where they saw CHA accomplishing the goal of valuing people. As the students began to share, they spoke of the many ways they saw the teachers, administrators, and students valuing people.  As they spoke, they would often begin their remarks with, “What I love most about CHA is…” The students’ speech began to be not just reflective but also deeply personal.  Here are some of their favorite things.

The teachers at CHA invest in the lives of their students.  Daily, teachers and coaches challenge the students to have intentional conversations with others.  Asking for prayer requests is routine, but what they love about CHA is that teachers do not just ask for prayer requests, they also follow-up. They continue to pray. Teachers at CHA teach from a Biblical worldview.  Every subject is taught from God’s Word.  The teachers help the students see connections between God and each subject.  The teachers value students by having high expectations and making them work hard. Teachers are available and personally invest in the lives of the students.  Teachers feel “called” to be at CHA and understand their purpose. What the student council leaders said they love about CHA teachers is that they championed each student.  One student said it best, “The teachers are our biggest fans.”

In regards to administration, the members of the student council said that the school leadership value families.  The administrators know the families and are involved in the families' lives.  The students could tell that the school leadership does not just know the families but enjoys being with them. Student council members said they love how the administrators speak to every student in the hall and ask how they were doing.  They were impressed that school administrators take the time to stop and talk with students each day and genuinely care about the students.

What was most encouraging was to hear how students at CHA value other students.  The opportunity to have foreign exchange students in the student body was echoed again and again as a gift.  From Salt and Light families adopting a foreign exchange student to Each One Reach One hosting gatherings for new and international students throughout the year, students value these cross-cultural relationships.  What they love about CHA is that the school is small enough that the students know each other not only in their own grade but in all the grades.  Clubs like Lantern Ladies which promote inter-grade relationships and mentoring are keys to student-to-student relationships.  Salt and Light’s sixth grade mentoring program is also a great way to value elementary students and help with the transition to secondary. One student leader said, “Everyone is nice to each other and everyone respects each other.”

As I sat and enjoyed hearing the hearts of these student leaders, I relished their joy, sincerity, and their passion for Christ, for each other, and for CHA. It is a gift to work at CHA.  Ask me what I love about CHA….the students. I have worked in other outstanding districts in our state with many fine educators and students.  I will say that the caliber of our students, which is seen in their love for Christ and others and lived out in their words and actions, is comparable to none.  I wonder, what do you love about CHA? Who could you tell about what God is doing at CHA? Tell someone.  Who would be at CHA if they could? Consider giving to the Opportunity Scholarship Fund to redirect a portion of your state income tax to allow more students to attend CHA. Share your comments on our Facebook post and let us know what you love.  We would enjoy hearing from you.

Have a great week!

Exercising the Right of Every Citizen

November 06, 2018
By Mr. Jackson Cargill

On the eve of the midterm elections, Congressman Tom Cole spoke to students at Christian Heritage Academy. Club Politico, the school politics club, invited Congressman Cole to inform the student body about political issues and promote excitement for schoolwide mock elections. Cole emphasized the importance and the privilege of voting.

Coming from a military lineage, his parents always stressed the direct impact a vote could make on military families. As soon as he was able to vote, he always considered which candidate understood the most about the issues that he faced personally. Over time, Cole’s research of political candidates and the issues of each election led to a larger interest in politics. He soon began to run campaigns for candidates, including his own mother, counselling them about the issues they should run on. From there, he ran for several state offices including the state senate and Oklahoma Secretary of State. He’s also served as chairman and executive director of the National Republican Congressional Committee. Mr. Cole was eventually elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2004 for the 4th District. His path to becoming a great influencer started with the simple act of voting. The students of CHA loved hearing him speak and look forward to voting themselves in the upcoming years!

The Greatest Show - The Importance of Parent Involvement

November 05, 2018
By Dr. Susan DeMoss

Last Thursday night, “The Greatest Show” Fall Festival was held. PURPOSE (Parents Utilizing Resources Providing Opportunities Serving and Encouraging) hosted this event. It is hard to imagine what school would be like without parent involvement. Parent involvement has been linked to strong social/emotional growth, positive student behavior, and academic achievement. Interestingly, in many schools parent involvement is non-existant or limited. Hundreds of research studies have been conducted on how to increase parent involvement and the benefits of it. Legislation has been written to even mandate parent involvement.

At Christian Heritage Academy, the faculty and staff understand that parents are the most important teachers and role models in a child’s life. Our mission at CHA is to assist the home and the church in building a solid foundation in the life of each student - a life which is characterized by a personal salvation experience, the development of Christian character, the Christian conscience and Christian self-government. CHA is blessed to have parents who are actively involved in their student’s lives and understand their God-given role. From helping with homework, serving on committees, working on drama set designs, to volunteering at athletic events, parents are a vital part of Christian Heritage Academy.

How grateful we are that our families live out Deuteronomy 6:6-9. Parent involvement is an integral part of Christian Heritage Academy. From PK-12th grade, parents are valued. As parents you are automatically members of PURPOSE and Booster Club. These organizations promote school spirit, host events to build community, conduct fundraisers to provide resources for the internal needs of the school such as homeroom moms, athletic and playground equipment, faculty/staff love offerings, and STEM needs. We are grateful for the leadership teams in both of these parent organizations.

As I watched our parents last Thursday night, it made me think of the lyrics to the title song from the Greatest Showman.  As they watched their children play, laugh and run with such innocence, it was almost like I could hear the echo of their heart, “It is every thing I ever need. It is every thing I ever want and it is here right in front of me. This is the greatest show.” Thank you parents for your investment in your child’s life. Thank you Lord for these precious families and their investment in Christian Heritage Academy. It is an honor to partner with you on this journey.

Please remember that on November 12, we are hosting informational breakfast (7:30-8:15 am) and lunch (11:30-12:15 pm)  sessions to provide more information on this tax-credit opportunity. Last week, we had six families attend one of these sessions to learn more about this opportunity. We already have eleven registered for our November session. If you would like to attend, please contact Dr. DeMoss at 672-1787 ext. 233 or email at osf@cha.org. Please RSVP at least two days prior to the date.
